Widgets are a great way to personalize and add new features to your blog. Whether you’d like to display your visitor statistics or add a simple search tool, you can do it with widgets.
We’ve assembled a list of popular and most useful widgets used on class blogs, student blogs and personal educator blogs for your pleasure.
Many of the widgets have been embedded in this post to show how they work.
Can’t see the example widgets?
Some of the embedded widgets aren’t designed to be viewed on mobile device. These widgets won’t load and you may see a white space in place of the widget if you are reading this post a mobile device.
Authors
Author widgets are a handy way of providing a link to posts by different authors on a shared blog or individual student blogs.
Author widget – Provides a handy link to authors’ posts on a group blog. Reader click on the authors name to view their posts.
Class blog widget – Displays a link to all student blogs attached to your class blog via My Class. See it in action under Class blogs on Huzzah’s class blog.
Author Widget
The author widget provides a handy link to authors’ posts on a group blog. Readers just need to click on the authors name to view all post published by that person.
Here’s what it looks like when it’s added to a sidebar:

Settings
Once you add the widget to your sidebar in Appearance > Widgets, you’ll see that the widget settings look like this:

- Title: Allows you to add your own custom title. For example, Student Authors.
- Role: Controls which user roles you want displayed in the author list.
- Displays: Allows you to control what is displayed in the author list. In most situations you would leave it as ‘Name only’. Display options are: Avatar + Name; Avatar only; Name only. If you choose an avatar option users need to upload their own avatar via Users > Your Profile (or Profile > Your Profile).
- Name Character: Used to control the number of characters displayed. In more situations you would leave it as 20.
- Avatar size: Controls the size of the avatar displayed next to the blog name, if you choose to the avatar display options.
- Display all authors: Leave selected if you want all authors listed including those that haven’t published a post.
- Number: Controls the number of posts that are listed.
Class Blogs Widget
The class blog widget provides a handy link to all student blogs attached to My Class. Students just need to click on a link to easily go to a class mates’ blog.
The Class blog widget only appears in Appearance > Widgets inside the class blog and student blogs when My Class has been set up.
Here’s what it looks like when it’s added to a sidebar:

Once you add the widget to your sidebar in Appearance > Widgets, you’ll see that the widget settings look like this:

- Title: Allows you to add your own
- custom title. For example, Student blogs.
- Displays: Allows you to control what is displayed in the student blog list. In most situations you would leave it as ‘Blog Name only’. Display options are: Avatar + Blog Name; Avatar only; Blog Name only; Avatar + Blog Domain; Blog Domain Only. If you choose an avatar option students need to upload their blog avatar via Settings > Blog Avatar. You can’t use Avatar display options if you have selected to display more than 20 blogs.
- Blog Name Character: Used to control the number of characters displayed. In more situations you would leave it as 30.
- Public Only: Change to No if you are using a private blog option on your student blogs.
- Order: Controls the order used to display the student blog list. In most situations you would change this to alphabetical, and we recommend students are encourage to use their first name in their blog title e.g. Max’s Blog, to make it easier to find specific student blogs. Order options are: Random. Alphabetical, Most Recent.
- Number: Controls the number of blogs that are listed in the class blog widget. This number should be adjusted to the number of student blogs you have otherwise it will show only 10 blogs.
- Avatar size: Controls the size of the avatar displayed next to the blog name, if you choose to the avatar display option.
Key Settings
We’ve highlighted the main settings you need to adjust on the class blog widget below. Remember to click Save after changing any settings.
Note_
The class blog widget isn’t automatically updated when you add new student blogs, or when student’s change their site title.
Go to Appearance > Widgets, open up the Class blog widget and click on Save to update the Class blog list
